Before you call in that insulation contractor, replace windows or try to plug holes yourself allow us to prepare a detailed map of exactly where you need to
concentrate your efforts especially if you have limited resources to repair leaks. Are you losing more energy through your window panes or through leaks
around the window frames? Are you losing money because of a drafty door or a non-insulated door? Is your furnace inefficient or do your ducts leak?
Michigan IR will help answer questions like these and help you use your money wisely.
Stopping Drafts is a Health Issue!!
The reduction of drafts does a lot more for your home
than just saving you money. Many drafts enter the
living structure from unconditioned air spaces. Air
that passes through the outside walls bring moisture
into the wall cavities. Excessive moisture in a wall
cavity can create microbial (mold) rich environments.
Excessive moisture will also increase deterioration of
the building materials. Another effect of an outside
air draft is the air will pick up particulates from the
wall cavity and bring those into your living space. To
improve indoor air quality drafts should be stopped
and building ventilation should be regulated.
Checking for Air Infiltration
Michigan IR will use our infrared camera to check for indoor air leaks, such as gaps along the
baseboard or edge of the flooring and at junctures of the walls and ceiling. We will check to see
if air can flow through these places:
* Electrical outlets
* Switch plates
* Window frames
* Baseboards
* Weather stripping around doors
* Fireplace dampers
* Attic hatches
* Wall- or window-mounted air conditioners.
Inspect windows and doors for air leaks.
We will note where you should plug and caulk holes or penetrations for faucets, pipes, electric
outlets, and wiring.
We will use our non-destructive thermal imaging camera to determine if there is insulation in
your walls. We may also want to make a small hole in a closet, behind a couch, or in some
other unobtrusive place to see what the wall cavity is filled with. Ideally, the wall cavity should be
totally filled with some form of insulation material.

The IR images of this house clearly demonstrate where we need to concentrate our efforts.

Stopping Drafts will increase your
comfort level!
A single draft is like having a localized air conditioner
in an otherwise insulted house. A small draft can
cause you discomfort no matter what your thermostat
setting. We can identify the source of that draft and
often recommend a simple cost effective solution.
